The pop rivets that hold the VIN in all LM Corvairs are called rosette
rivets. They're available from at least one or two vendors in Hemmings,
though they are expensive. So their presence is not always a reliable
indicator.

Keep in mind that anything that was made in the past can also be made
again. Just depends on what kind  of market you have as to how practical it
is to do. That is also why collectors (for example, of such things as coins
and guns) always look for the patina of age. It's better to leave the item
"as found" than to try to clean it up. (It's also why original cars have a
small but strong following.) A nicely kept but obviously "used" original
car is often prized over a "perfectly" restored one. ("It's only original
once!")
