All,

Have already contacted Hemmings. My post to them and their reply as follows
below.

Mark

Sure thing! I always love to hear the full story.

LOL! I kind of figured. Accidents will happen. As I'll often say, IT
happens, with a capital SH. ;o)

And if you ever want the entire story on 5999, with pictures, just ask.
It's quite a tale.

Oops, yeah, my bad. I transposed those two numbers.

Dear Mr. Lentinello,

Just received your January '13 issue with the top 100 collector cars
featured. In the "Lost & Found" department, you featured the last Corvairs
built. However, there was a mistake made. Number 5999 is NOT missing, but
rather 5998. I ought to know, as I once owned 5999 and donated it to the
Corvair Preservation Museum, on the condition that it never see private
hands again. If you have the time, have I got a story to tell about it!

Anyway, of the last seven Corvairs built by Chevrolet, we know at least
something of six of them. It's 5998 that I refer to as our "black hole"
car, as it rolled off the assembly line and was never heard from again. In
fact, all we know is that it's suspected to be a coupe, by a b&w picture
supposedly taken of two men standing in front of it. We can't even tell if
it's a Monza or 500 model. Beyond that, we know nothing of the car or its
equipment. The rest of them, from 5994 to 5999 still exist, or at least did
last time we heard from them.

Number 5994 showed up in the Detroit Free Press offered for sale some years
back, and is believed to now be owned by a club member in the Carolinas.
Number 5995 is reported to be rusting away outside some place in Louisiana.
Number 5996 has been owned by countless club members and is still out there
somewhere. Number 5997 is the last convertible and is for sale, at last
count. Other than it, all are (believed to be) Monza coupes.

By the way, when they were built, 5996 and 5999 were identical LeMans Blue
Monza coupes, with 140/automatic transmissions. The rest (what we know of,
anyway) were all 110/automatics, except 5994, which was a manual. They all
had black interiors, except convertible 5997, which was Frost Green with
medium green interior.
