CORSA 2012: Thursday AM Update

Brian,

This is very good news. I was happy to read that Concours scoring moved along quickly and that Harry's registration database works very well.

We're all aware of the fact that NECC already offers online registration for its high-performance driving events. But NECC does not have an online registration database. Instead, when folks click the "Submit" button at the bottom of the online registration form, the HTML code invokes a little PHP script which emails their registration data to me. When I receive the email, I paste it into an Excel spreadsheet on my own home computer. It works well enough for our NECC events, but for a large complicated event like a CORSA convention, an online database would offer many practical advantages that I'll be happy to explain.

During July, I explored the possibility of creating my own online events registration database for NECC. I found that it would be difficult for me to do unless we migrate our website to a host that offers support for either MySQL (expensive) or Microsoft FrontPage server extensions (which are obsolete). Even then, we could end up hiring a computer geek who really knows how to write scripts in PHP or Perl. I can't guarantee that I could master those languages fast enough.

Another alternative would be for NECC to sign up with an independent "events registration" service. The prices for them aren't cheap - about $4 per person who registers. Assuming 500 registrations, that's $2,000.

I'm very much willing to work with Harry Jensen instead, especially after reading your latest update.

Subject: CORSA 2012: Thursday AM Update

Concours yesterday. My interest was in how posting of scores went. Was shocked to learn this is only second year that a computer data base was used. prior years --pencils and hand held calculator!! Except Parsippany 84, of course. Posting crew was Iowa convnetion posters who volunteered to do this year. (Most volunteered to do it next year.) Most not computer geeks so last year was learning experience. Harry jensen's 'tweaks' and the posters experience made it a breeze. Postin finished at 2;47 PM!!!
There goes the excuse that we can't have a concours on Saturday becasue we wouldn't be able to get the scoring done. Still some 'my car will get dirty' objections. I'm being polite abd trying to assure them that all day Thursday is available to scrub your ball joint with a tooh brush. A very few might not come but the desnity of cars in NE will make up for it.
Spent about two hours becoming familar with harry jensen registration and event data base. Works very well. My thoughts rught now we shouldn't re-invnet the wheel. Big issue is his coordiantion with host chapter on site. I think that Al Lacki working as liason between him and Mike Paroz will be a big help. I'll explain in detail when I get home.
Today, I intend to discuss ways to allow non-CORSA members to attend thru some form on temp membership. Bob marlow proposed a detailed plan to CORSA BOD a month or so ago but it was ignored with comments like 'the convention isn't for outsiders'!! No way to get new members.
