  We certainly can do without them, but like you I think they are 
preferable to pins.  In my business, lanyards are one of the items we 
sell, but generally speaking, what we are selling are lanyards that are 
custom-imprinted and which are, as a result, pricey.  However, there do 
exist plain, cheap lanyards and elastic neck cords.  I can quote for 
1000 of them if you wish, but Mike, what is the price you have found?  
It may be as good as mine.
