Play in the bearing is fine.

As for the valve cover gaskets, I'd have to say a squeeze-tube of Permatex 
RTV has served me much better than locally-available gaskets unless you're 
down the street from a Corvair parts supplier.

The secret to making the form-a-gasket work is to get the metal clean and 
oil free.  if it can't stick to the metal (because there's oil on it) it 
won't form a seal.
