So many times you can follow an email string of a problem, but never hear the
final outcome....Figured I'd break that trend. Following is the outcome of
my torque converter adventure:

Recap, after installing a rebuilt converter from a Corvair vendor:
> "Thanks to all who replied to my query concerning boil out of tranny fluid
> from 64 Greenbrier PG. Installing a rebuilt torque converter solved the boil
> out of tranny fluid. Unfortunately, now a different problem: A rotational
> vibration/shutter, when engine is revved in neutral, and when moving in
> drive... The rebuilt converter came from a Corvair vendor, and was advertised as
> "professionally rebuilt...Thanks in advance for any advice/insights
> forthcoming,

> Then, after installing another converter, obtained from an individual...
> Vibration gone:
Still no boil out of fluid, life is beautiful again !!! The second
converter was a NOS GM rebuilt > unit. Upon examining the FIRST (vendor) rebuilt
> converter, I found the starter ring gear (which the vendor's rebuilder
> installed new as part of the converter rebuild), was welded on crooked by more than
> 1/4". I could also find no balancing weights on the vendor's converter.
> Anyway, now the challenge is to convince the vendor that his converter is
> defective, and to get my purchase price and shipping back. I'll still be out the
> labor involved for the first drive train R&R, but at least the van is again
> operating correctly. Lesson learned: Contrary to what I heard from quite a few
> respondents to my questioning what could be causing the vibration, rebuilt
> converters CAN be reassembled poorly. Cheers !

Thanks to all who replied to my query concerning boil out of tranny fluid
from 64 Greenbrier PG. Installing a rebuilt torque converter solved the boil out
of tranny fluid. Unfortunately, now a different problem: A rotational
vibration/shutter, when engine is revved in neutral, and when moving in drive. The
vibration won't shake your eye teeth out, but it's definitely there....starts
about 2200 RPM. The rebuilt converter came from a Corvair vendor, and was
advertised as "professionally rebuilt with all worm parts replaced". I suppose a
torque converter can be out of balance? Any ideas, similar experiences? Not
looking forward to dealing with the vendor, nor pulling the drive train back
out.

Thanks in advance for any advice/insights forthcoming,
Mike Mauro, 64 Greenbrier Deluxe, PG, A/C
