Thanks to all for the great advice. I have to admit my favourite is 
Bob's idea of the Jetta catalytic converters. It's brilliant and has a 
certain devious quality which appeals to me. I will of course do a tune 
up etc. but the catalytic converter... that's the silver bullet I was 
looking for!  I'm going to try to do that on Saturday and I will 
definitely post the results here along with my report on the rear end 
noise which I tore into last Saturday.
