[FC] Need some expert help

Hey guys, I know this is not specifically a F/C question but maybe some of fellows have been here.  I am installing a 66 4 speed in a resto. and I have no back-up lights. The circuit is good, everthing else checks.  I have found that the switch does not bottom on the shaft in the side cover.  Checking with a depth guage, there is a considerable distance between the bottom of the switch and the shaft.  I have even tried it without the washer, still does not touch.  Any ideas?????????
