[FC] Tips For Removing Exhaust Studs?

The way that I have always removed them if there is anything sticking out is
to heat the stud end till it is cherry red hot. Then I grab the stud with a
vice grip that has been sitting in a bucket of ice and clamp down on the stud
as best I can. I then slowly move the stud forward and backwards loosening
and tightening as I go. I only move it a little at a time until it is loose
enough to come out. This is so the rust will break off rather than the stud.
Clean the stud end with a wire brush before heating to get as much off as you
can. Wear leather gloves so you don't get burned. I have never had a stud
not come out using this method unless it was so badly rusted, that there was
no material to grab hold of. If you hold the manifold in a vise, it will make
it easier to work on. Have the studs pointed upward. Take your time and
remember that the heat will expand the manifold in the stud area and the cold
vice grip will shrink the stud when you clamp down on it. Work slowly enough
not to break the stud off and fast enough that the manifold doesn't cool down
too much. Don't be afraid to take a second bit at the stud after you cool the
vice grip and re heat the manifold. Paul in CT.....
