I would suggest that you have one of the defective speedometers rebuilt by a
independent rebuilder.  I know that there is one in Danvers MA that does
them
for a lot of the car restoration shops.  It isn't cheap, but it is the only
way to get a reliable one.  After 40 years, they get tired, the grease gets
dry and the magnets loose their magnetism.
As for the top boot problem, try using a piece of 6 mil plastic as a space
before you put the snap on.  That should take up any of the slack between
the
buttons.  If your stainless steel boot trim is broken, I know where to get
it
exchanged for repaired/re welded units.  Paul in CT.....
