my gosh do you guys have a clarks catalog?  he lays it out as nice as anyone 
as far as id ing the clutch stuff.   1 7/8 is early for sure.  there is NO 
reason you cant come up with the right combination of stuff. i suspect(without 
seeing it) you have an incorrect mix of stud/pressure plate/throwout bearing. i 
really doubt there is any issue with the cable/pedal unless you modified it 
trying to figure out the problem. i would not consider trying the hydraulic 
nitemare on a stock vehicle...and the carpet makes NO difference in the equation 
at all. i have done this many times. if it was me i would convert to all late 
clutch stuff anyhow.  get the book out.  i prefer late because you can use the 
camaro throwout bearing that is designed to last under constant slight 
pressure..and it does. i went thru throwout bearings on my rampy yearly when it was 
stick until i changed over.they dont like setting around then going on 1500 
mile trips i guess. after putting late stuff in it it was fine until i put a 
powerglide in it..now it is even finer..
someone near you must have a late setup you can get???  good luck and measure
