[FC] catalytic converters

I wonder if a converter will work properly on a Corvair?  Cars that have
them also have an air pump to pump oxygen into the exhaust stream to "light
them up" and help burn polutants.  Maybe a Corvair has such a short exhaust
system and runs hot enough to work without a smog pump.  Any comments here?

Are catalytic converters directional? I'm trying to install one on my
Corvan to pass aircare and it appears it may be easier to fit backwards.
I have no idea if this would effect the function. Does anyone know?
