I have this same problem on a Corvair buggy. I'm suspecting the fit between
the new pilot bearing I.D. and the input shaft O.D. is too tight and the
shaft is spinning whether or not the clutch is engaged or disengaged. Also
could be a bent input shaft that makes it bind up in the pilot bushing.

Solved

The pedal free play does not seem to change. I believe I have the cable
adjusted properly...maybe a little on the tight side.

After the three minutes and the problem starts, I can turn off the engine,
shift into first or reverse and I can feel the van try to move a little with
the clutch pedal depressed. For some reason, the transmission is being
being spun slightly by the engine even though the clutch pedal is down.

I tried to use the best parts I could find when I made the conversion: I
used a rebuilt pressure plate and disc from the Underground. A bolted
flywheel. I purchased a new t/o bearing at the same time but I later
replaced that with an NOS one that was the correct 1 7/8 height. I used an
NOS input shaft and a Genuine GM pilot bushing. I used a new "better than
stock" t/o bearing snout. The latest change was the installation of an NOS
clutch cable.

The input shaft seemed very tight when I fit it into the pilot bushing. I
think that this might be where the problem is.

Charles,
How about answering a few more diagnostic question, OK?

When this occurs, does the amount of free play of the pedal change from
normal? You know the amount that the pedal can be depressed before engaging
the pressure plate? Do you have the proper free play to start with? How much
is it?

Have you tried to adjust the clutch so as to eliminate the free play as a
trial (don't run with it like that) so as to see if you get complete
disengagement after your 3 minute run?

Also when this occurs, what is the situation with the van when you turn off
the engine and shift into first or reverse, and start the engine with the
clutch pedal fully depressed? Does the van try to move? or not?

What is your guess as to why it is OK to start and goes bad after 3 minutes?
Is it a heat problem, or is something stretching, or is it something else?

Did you measure the movement of the clutch fork shaft (from engaged to
disengaged) before and after the problem?
What measurements did you get?

Have you had any club members check it out and offer opinions?

Regards,
Bob Helt
