You need to look at the rod and you will see that there is a flat stamped into the end.  If you turn the latch so the flat matches up with the flats in the hole, you should be able to get it apart.  It is similar to the attachment of the choke mechanism linkage on a carburetor.

  Hello:  First I wish to thank everyone who assisted me in the hunt for the 
  latching mechanism for the driver's side door.  I now have a very nice 
  example to install so we can get the Rampside back on the road.  Now I need 
  assistance in installing the part.  I have removed the 3 phillips heads on 
  the door edge as well as the inside door handle bolts so that the entire 
  mechanism can be manuvered inside the door.  Thus far I have not been able 
  to get the arm from the inside door handle to release at the latch so I can 
  remove the broken one so as to install the 'new' one.  Any assistance from 
  you experts would be much appreciated.  Thanks.  Steve
