  On the Ford and Dodge vans we refer to those as a belly pan. The purpose 
there is to keep air directed thru the radiator and deter it from going under 
and bypassing it. Obviously this isnt the purpose on the Vairs but one thing I 
ll note  here is that after seeing many,many old vans and disecting them to 
bits I ve noticed that the ones that kept the belly pans in place had more solid 
floors(less rust) than the ones without. Another good purpose for the belly 
pan is it keeps road salt and dirt away from the master cylinder boot area,brake 
and clutch pedal pivots, and brake light switch.
       Most older engines run hot without the pan in place but a well 
maintained motor can operate just fine without it. Another purpose for the shield is 
it keeps road debris from harming or puncturing the radiator,again,not an 
issue on the Vairs. I ll have to check my 63 and see if its got a pan on it.
       Im headed out Thursday for Carlisle,Pa. and the Ford Nationals in my 
66 Econoline. If anybody sees a blue van broke down on the highway,please lend 
a hand:-) Hopefully the trip will be uneventful.
