Polishing aluminum is a fine art, I would start with scrap first and learn
by trial and error.
There are different grades of polishing compound as well.

I have as place near me in Medina NY, Barnes Metal Finishing, that strips
the aluminum and straightens and polishes it to perfection. I just had a
set of Grille surrounds for a 67 Dodge Coronet done, they were badly faded
and dented and scratched to begin with. They are now concours quality. Cost
me around $100 to get those done, but if you figure good used go for $600 a
pair, and NOS is over a grand, it was quite a deal. They do not re-anodize
though, but as long as it is kept polished, all it takes is a little
aluminum polish every couple of years to make it right.
I also had side chrome, hood chrome, grille for my 62 valiant and more done.

I do know from my own experience trying to do a door sill on my own
wheel.........the wheel can grab it and wrap it around the wheel in an
instant!

I read an article in Popular Hot Rodding Magazine on restoring a Ford
Falcon grill. And the info that really stuck with me was the fact you have
to remove the anodizing before you did anything else.I think they used a
type of nitrate (NOT A FERTILIZER !) to strip the anodizing. Easy off will
remove the paint. So be prepared to repaint the grill(much easier than
polishing the aluminum).Always try to start with the most fine sandpaper as
possible because you will have to remove whatever sand marks you put in.
And try to use a buffing wheel designed for bench grinder, heat and speed
matter on polishing aluminum.
I bought a grill off of E-Bay to practice polishing, and suprisingly it
mint! My origional one will now be my experimental piece.
