Regarding the recent interesting article in Corvanantics on late model starter switches, could I muddy the waters and solicit the wisdom of our oracles in this area?
I have, sitting at this very desk, a red box from the Standard Motor Products Inc of Long Island City, NY (Standard ). The box carries their part # US-29. Within said container is a starter switch with FIVE lugs, 4 in one plane and 1 in the perpendicular. An accompanying user instruction sheet advises the ecstatic new owner of this strange part some interesting facts, i.e. that this switch may not be identical to the one being replaced and; in that melancholy eventuality,
the unhappy new owner is to cut off the offending tabs. This would lead me to conclude that, in some applications, the purchaser gets a starter switch that will function mechanically with the key and lock , however, the terminal side must be cobbled together, perhaps even cutting off the harness plug and crimping on female terminals. I ncidentally, the faded and yellowed above mentioned instructions further apprise the now disgusted purchaser of the applicability of this sorry
component: Acadian.....62-64, Chevy II..........62-64, Corvair Truck R-10.......65, GMC......65, GMC (1000-4000 eng
305C,E) 63-65, and by using a special locating washer, consumers may also apply this wretched replacement to their Buicks of 61-63, and 65, Buick Special ......61-63, Chev.......57, and Corvette.......58-62. My purpose in composing this tale of woe is to caution anyone buying a late model F/C ignition switch to proceed with caution, namely to have the old part in hand and also....... Does any one out there have parts catalogs that may shed further light on this subject?
Regards, Ralph in Fla. 63 Rampside who will gladly sell the aforementioned switch, mucho cheapo......pssssst-.No ears to excise like in Fran's example. And now you know the REST of the story.
