Check the rubber tube to the advance to see if it is collapsing. Old rubber degrades and causes problems. Paul in CT

  What's that sound?
OK! All you 180ers where exactly right!
Possibly, probably, the lifters had not pumped up and that is why I could
not blow air into #1... even on the exhaust/intake part of the cycle...
Cranked the engine with BIL sticking his finger in the hole and found the
real TDC we were looking for, found the dist 180 out, flipped it, adjusted
the dist until just where points open, and vroom! away she went! Beauty, eh?
Ten minutes and the valves were quiet, the smoking stopped, balanced the
carbs, timing light showed bang on 0 from the eyeball setting, adjusted to
  13 btdc.... smooooooth man!
  But wait!
Why does it seem to stick on a fast idle sometimes? I notice the vacuum
advance advancing but not returning.... sticky?

  toodles
  Merv
