This engine has about 3 hours running time on it after a complete rebuild including new pistons & bearings, seals, gaskets, completely redone heads by a corvair shop with new valves, springs and staked seats.

With vaccuum line disconnected I show 16 degrees of advance, points set @ 29 degrees of dwell. (this is a 1965 110 motor with 1965 140 heads) The distributor was in a box of parts I received with the block of the motor when I got it, I have the #1 plug wire attached to the cap directly in line with the rod coming out of the vacuum advance dashpot. The distributor is turned as far as it can go C-Clockwise as the V-A dashpot hits the turkey roaster.

I noticed that when I held my hand over the top of the secondary carbs, there was pretty significant vacuum at the top of the 2 secondary carbs, the right one not as strong as the left, so I taped plugs over both of the secondaries for now.

I removed the 3 plugs from the left bank, as that was the only side that was backfiring, and they were very black and sooty. I cleaned them, gapped them and then checked the mixture screw on the left carb . It was at 2& 1/2 turns out.

I could get it to idle only at about 1200 rpm without stalling. I could see jets of fuel into the carb throat on both primary carbs when I goosed the throttle, so the accellerator pumps work .

I opened the valve on my propane torch with no flame and noticed that with the propane going into the left carb horn, I could let off the throttle & it would idle down to 650. When I took away the propane it stalled. The propane had no effect on the right bank of carbs.

These carbs did not come with this motor, but they are correct for 1965 140's. I rebuilt them using rebuild kits from Clarks but apparently they are not working correctly. I am going to assume that at least 3 of the carbs are not working correctly, and I need to see if replacing them first makes it run right.

I rebuilt a 140 in a coupe ten years ago and very much enjoyed this motor's performance once I got it all sorted out.

Thanks

Tim
