Thanks to everyone who sent diagrams and links and info on alternator
conversion. I have an old casting, so I determined that "1"=F and "2"=R. I wired
up according to provided diagrams, and I no longer have the battery drain
through the alternator. I jumpered the 2/R post to the BAT output instead
of using a splice elsewhere.

here's what I found:
connected system puts out 12.85vdc at alternator/battery
turning on lights and heater fan drops vdc to 11vdc +/- at dash, but stays
at 12.8 +/- at alternator/battery
disconnecting alternator at BAT connection from battery, alternator reads
7.5vdc across BAT and ground

--->through all tests, the GEN dash light remains on and bright<---

do I need to get a different GEN bulb? someone said that they got a smaller
bulb and that fixed a problem with the alternator activating.

also, since the disconnected alternator reads 7.5vdc, is it bad, or is that
normal when it's not being activated by the 2/R wire (also disconnected
from the BAT post)?

thanks,

Bill
