Thanks to everyone who posted links and info. I wired the alternator
according to diagrams, but now it's not charging. I may have a standard
high-output alternator, and not the "one wire" conversion I THOUGHT I was buying.
The rear of the alternator has the old case, and the connections are the
same as the original parts as seen in supplier catalogs; not the internal
regulators that are for the converted alternators. The case has "R" and "F"
markings. I think I still have the old regulator somewhere, I'll wire that back
in and see what I get.

The reason I switched was that I was getting a power drain through the
alternator from the regulator, testing the ground lug on the battery to the
alternator body, as well as the chassis, with the key off or on and motor not
running was producing voltage. Disconnecting the voltage regulator would
stop the current. I now know that I can use a diode to only allow current to
flow in one direction, or attach a relay like I did before that will only
close (allow current) when the key is on.
