Personally, I do not understand what you are measuring, nor how you get 
measurements accurate to hundredths of an inch with a "rope".  I would 
like a little more detail, and then maybe I could learn something?  This 
does not sound like a "classic" "string alignment" setup.

I think I know what you are doing, and normally one measures the tread 
width at the front and back of the tires on one axle and this difference 
is the toe-in as a linear measurement.  Toe-in is rarely, but 
occasionally given in degrees, so if you are measuring two sides of a 
triangle, I guess you'll need to get out the geometry book. 

And then you need to do the conversion for radial tires, if that is what 
you have, and if you don't then you'll need to tell us all some more 
about your tires  <wink>
