Yes, the resistor is in-line on the + side.  If you are running an electronic ignition the resistor is likely not needed.  Depends on the coil as well.  They often indicate for use with or without.  My drivers usually have a Pertronix and aftermarket coil designed to run on full voltage.  Just a few less variables in the equation.
 
Your story reminded me of my father telling me of having condensers (point system) getting hot in vans that would kill the engine but fire back up given just a moment to cool (usually the time it takes to stop, get out, start troubleshooting - just to find you have spark again)   This is purely anecdotal and from memory.
