Sometimes one wonders what the miracles of modern ignition systems is
doing to our collective knowledge of how to work on cars. Cars that go
100,000 miles and all they need is a set of plugs and an air filter let
us forget that setting the distributor timing is something one should do
automatically when you've messed with whatever is inside the
distributor, as it is this "trigger" inside the distributor that
determines the timing. If one has even loosened a screw inside the
distributor, this "trigger" point has been changed, and if you don't
have a computer that sets the timing from a knock sensor, resetting the
distributer's timing point is required.

In the era of these Corvairs, that would be known as a tune-up, and a
tune-up includes making the car run (which you have done), and run well,
things like carb adjustment, idle adjustment, check the fan belt,
washing the windshield, inside and out, checking tire pressure, and many
other checks and adjustments, and a test drive to check for proper
operation. If the test drive doesn't go well, one is not done with the
"tune-up".

Glad to hear the rig is now running, but it sounds like you aren't quite
done with the job.
