[FC] Engine Disassembly continued

Harry,

I looked over your photos and I think I see what Bill was talking about.  It
appars that you may have a 61-63 case half mixed with a 64+ case half.  The
later, larger engines need more clearance for the big end of the connecting rod
on the opposite crankcase half.  If you look inside the crankcase, directly next
to where each cylinder sticks thru the crankcase, you'll see a half moon shaped
recess. They are for rod clearance.  Earlier short stroke motors are flat next
to the cylinder spigot bores on the inside of the case.

If you go to picture 130 on your site
http://picasaweb.google.com/HarrySmith1957/PhoneCo1963CorvairRampside#5537333468518100242

Look at the even side (top of the picture) and you'll see where the cylinder is
more exposed on the left side.  On cylinder 3 (middle) you'll also see a
fingernail shaped darker area...thats the recess for the larger stroke crank.

If you now look to the next photo 131
http://picasaweb.google.com/HarrySmith1957/PhoneCo1963CorvairRampside#5537333491625332834

Compare the area to the left of the rightside crankcase half (#1 side) to the
right of the leftside (#2) side crankcase half.  You'll see the left side is
flat and relatively smooth and only a thin edge of the inside of the cylinder
shows thru.  On the right side half you'll see the case is cut back near the
stud hole.

The next 2 photos show the same thing on the other cylinder pairs.  The left
side crankcase half is the one stamped with the engine number T0327V.  (V is FC
manual transmission suffix- W is FC powerglide code)It appears correct for your
truck. However from the looks of the inside it appears that the right half MAY
have been replaced. If so it would also appear that it could have been replaced
with a 64 or 65 FC case half because I see that in picture 144 it still has the
FC oil fill tube hole (under the #1 intake pushrod.)

Another possibility (and it's another long shot) is that since your engine
number shows it was built March 27th (presumably 1963) that Chevrolet was
already changing over the castings for the the soon to come 64 models when this
engine was built.

One last possibility is that I'm just seeing a recessed area that is normal on
early FC cases.  While I'm intimately acquainted with the inside of early
Corvair car crankcases, I must confess that I've never seen the inside of an
early FC case.

If you do have a set of mismatched cases, then Bill is absolutely correct that
now is the time to find a proper matched set of cases.  Each engine case is
machined together and you can not swap halves around.  I'd be concerned about
what else was done to this engine if someone would actually do that.   Also, the
condition of the cylinders and pistons don't look like much to write home
about.  The good news is that it "should be" realitively cheap and easy to find
another case or complete core engine to use instead.

Good Luck!

Andrew

Oh yeah... I'm also attaching a photo for you Harry that is of the inside of an
early car crankcase.  Compare how flat the area is around the inside of the
crankcase where the cylinders sticks thru the walls.

Subject: [FC] Engine Disassembly continued

I got the heads off tonight and have added some more pictures.

http://picasaweb.google.com/HarrySmith1957/PhoneCo1963CorvairRampside

I an extremely concerned about the engine after the comments and
observations made today. Can someone please educate me on the differences in
the block, I looked again tonight and I cannot see it. I need to make a
decision at this point as to what I am going to do and I would appreciate
the feedback of people who have done this before. I have never been inside a
Corvair engine so I am completely ignorant of what it is.
