A couple comments on Ken's very excellent reply --

First, it depends on where you live, or where your car has lived -- some locales tend to rust those upper heads studs and nuts to the point where even thinking about trying to loosen them will strip them out of the block, and others, mostly west coast locations, the nuts are new-like, still have the original hex, and turn like they were put on yesterday. If you are the first case, leave them alone! Second case folks have more options to consider, but it seems reasonable that if you don't already have an eminent gasket failure looming in your future, the lower stud only method does work.

Moral? When you first get a new used Corvair, crawl under there and inspect those upper head studs and nuts, and since you are under there, apply your favorite rust-proofing penetrant type product -- repeat at oil changes, ie, help yourself if they ever need to be loosened. This is why Clarks sells those stainless cap nuts, to protect the exposed threads.

There are two different oil pans -- early and late -- and, with the number of 164 inch motors that have found there way into FC's, you need to know that the torque spec is also different -- 50 vs 20 inch pounds -- the later pan is thicker steel with only one rib running between the bolt holes, and is a better choice if you have that option.
