i was into the 9889 cams mainly because of what i have read over the years
, and one 140 pg i had in an early coupe a long time ago. now i have built
a lot of motors in the last few years , and i find that the 889 cam runs
out of wind too soon in an FC. BUT if you run a 9891 cam , you must spend
more time on tweaking to avoid pinging or detonation with today's gas. I feel
a dual exhaust , and larger jets in the carbs , along with careful
tweaking of the distributor are needed. also , spend money on the heads at a shop
that understands CORVAIRS. the other things to play with are tire sizes ,
and differential ratio's.then maybe pay attention to instruments to monitor
head temp , oil temp , and learn what normal readings are. things are more
of a challenge to get right these days , i have a few "trophies" from
different ideas i have tried over the years , including a few nice pistons that
made hard luck trophies from poor grade gas sold as high test ...so keep
your ears open.
happy new year!
regards, tim colson
