Since steel cables really don't "stretch", what Bob means is that some 
of the strands have broken, allowing the cable to unwind a bit, thus 
becoming longer -- generally the first step towards a total cable failure.


Being able to drive and shift without a clutch is a vital skill all 
Corvair owners should acquire -- seems you are on your way to attaining 
such skills.
