Patrick,

Obviously I used the wrong term. My intent was to say if I did a full on, make it just like it was the day it rolled off the assembly line restoration which I referred to as "frame off". Thanks to everyone who has made suggestions for your help. One of the first things we heard from our friends in the Bonneville Corvair Club was how friendly and helpful Corvair owners are to we rookies who are new to the restoration of Chevrolet's air-cooled gem.

 Michael

Corvairs are Uni-Body's The other issue with the 61 style shifter is how low and forward they sit under the trucks. I wonder if the later protective sheild could be used to protect the shifter from the front? I parted my 64 parts van and kept all the later shift parts and I still will not change my 61 over! ------------------------------ Message: 2 Date: Sun, 25 Nov 2012 12:13:28 -0600 From: CorvanAntics <corvanantics at gmail.com> Subject: Re: [FC] Transmission linkage To: corvanatics at corvair.org Message-ID: <CAJukY1C-pgW47HP2QxSakSb=O-33YNftGUVQwLnp8xWtJtacOA at mail.gmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Fran Schmit's tech article in the Corvanatics Sept/Oct

That shift kit on a late FC shifter is just plain awsome to drive. If I did it again , I would probably weld it. that was many years ago , It is now a powerglide with very short stock throw... I needed the short throw because of extra 2 way radio equipment hanging on the radio pod being hard on knuckles at times. regards, Tim Colson In a message dated 11/25/2012 5:13:47 P.M. believe the original question was whether or not the manual 'mystery shifter' could be converted to a cable linkage. The answer is yes, of course it 'can', but ... A cable shift conversion is easier to do with a side shifted trans, which in any Corvair is another whole project. The good cables this needs are not inexpensive, nor is building the hardware required at the shift lever. But, it can be done! Most folks learn to tighten up the weak points in the stock shifter, replacing bushings where necessary, and learn how to live with the 'charms' of the mystery shifter -- it is part of FC Corvairing. And it fits the image of the thrifty Corvair owner! Godspeed!
