As shown in the attachment, there were three different size Master Cylinder floor plugs. The small 3 1/4" diameter plug was used in 1961 - 62 (maybe early 63) FCs; the 3 5/8" dia plug was used in 1963, and the large 4 1/8" plug was used in 1964 -65. I believe the change in plug (and hole) size roughly corresponded to changes in the master cylinder and the design of the cap. For example, the 3 5/8" plug was for a floor hole big enough for the thumb-screw MC lid, and the hole (and plug) diameter was increased in 1964 to accommodate the new snap-on retainer.

Only the small size plug is available from Clarks (and many other suppliers). I can reproduce the other two plugs; given an old plug, I can extract the internal metal plate and recoat with new rubber.

Steve

Subject: ISO: FC FRONT FLOOR MAT

Its always fun to find things out the hard way (but it can almost always be worse). And sometimes the provenance alone is interesting enough...

So the good news is I picked up a pretty nice, hard to find FC front rubber floor mat on Facebooks Corvair Trader this past week. While the fit is correct to the floor, turns out chevy apparently made some changes along the way as a) the holes for the gas pedal mounting bolts don't line up, and b) the mat extends over the gas pedal's plastic cover assembly that goes into the firewall instead of having a factory cutout. I never noticed or gave this any thought but upon closer inspection of the original 64 dlx mat I still have (rough condition), these original gas pedal bolt holes are there as well as the relocated holes (FYI, Other holes for the clutch, floor shifter, and under the gas pedal are there as well). Fwiw, I also recently found out that the master cylinder floor covers are different sizes based on year.

So now I have a nice original rubber floor mat that's good enuf to go in an "early FC" as is with only minor repairs.
Id prefer not to cut this mat up as a donor but that means I'm still in need of either a nice 64-65 dlx mat or a 64-65 dlx donor mat from which I can harvest the missing pieces to repair mine (that plan includes using a thin rubber roof membrane as a new backing skin). Key donor areas I need are up behind the foot pedals and the small section between the gas pedal assembly and heater box entering the floor.

So If anyone is looking for an original rubber floor mat for early FC and/or has a 64-65 deluxe mat in either straight up replacement or donor condition please contact me and we can discuss off-line.

Also, i'd be very interested to know any info that Kent, Dave, or Steve may have about Chevys approach to these design changes over the years.

Thx,
Rod, pittsburgh
