Someone may have covered this in a note I didn't read, but another way 
of removing the pilot bushing is The Superior Wet Paper Method.

You dip bits of newspaper in water and pack them into the bushing, 
then drive the input shaft into the bushing to force the bushing out. 
  You have to pause and add more paper as you go.  The paper doesn't 
squish out of a worn bushing the way grease does, and the residue is 
not messy and easy to remove.
