Curt,
The car is running great...both problems solved! Excellent pit crew
work...thanks for staying a bit overtime.
As to the turbo head. I am going to go ahead and CC the chambers and
calculate the compression for each of those cylinders and then talk to the
experts (you guys) about whether or not the difference in volume and
compression will make a difference on the running engine. One possibility
is to remove the same amount of material from each of the chambers, but
then I would have to remove the other head and do the same. The total
volume of material removed may be irrelevent.
I did manage to replace the two damaged valve guides from that chamber
and now have to get a tool to ream those guides just a bit (first time I
have had an automobile head in our kitchen oven...another first!). I
heated the head and froze the guide and then drove it home with some moly
grease applied to the guide. The guide was .002 oversize so each guide
took a very thin sliver of aluminum along with it...they should be good
for a long time. Once I ream the guides and get the valves in place, I
will lap the valves/seats to a perfect seal (the seats look great and seal
surfaces on the valves are excellent). At that point I can go ahead and
CC them to see what I have wrought.
Does that make sense?
In any case, this constitutes great fun for me as I have never replaced
valve guides or valves before...much less calculated final compression
ration, lapped valves, etc. I guess the success on the Camaro (however
fraught) has emboldened me a bit.

So, how stands the project?
By the way, I was thinking about the nicks in the turbo head. Can you
get some one to heliarc a bead of aluminum over the nicks and then grind
the whole thing smooth? Maybe it is not worth the time and money!
