Ok, had a moment to look in the shop manual.  The '65 book specifies 
80W gear lube, what I recall using last was 80W/90.  That was a while 
ago, so I'm not sure what's available now.  As for capacity, the book 
specifies 4.5 pints - or 2 1/4 quarts - of lube for the diff.  However, 
the '65 four speed trans takes another 3.6 pints, so an empty transaxle 
will need a skosh over a gallon.  Yours probably had some left in it 
but maybe it wasn't full, so if you put in 2 1/2 quarts then it would 
be a little low.
