As with just about anything "it depends".  I've run open 2 1/2" pipes  
on the street, it was *great* for a couple months - I was driving the  
car to work every day too, going through a tunnel was fan-tas-tic.  It  
did finally get old, tho.  I have the big extractors on the "parts"  
car, unfortunately it's dropped a seat so you can't hear them.  They  
are kinda loud, but I didn't find them really irritating.  If you want  
to try them, they're for sale for less than the ones on eBay.  I'm  
selling them because I want to run a big single exhaust instead, and  
now that I have to do heads, I may just go back to headers anyway.
