You are correct, it was a ground problem.  Greg suggested I scrap away  all 
of the gunk on the inside of the body where the lense bracket makes contact.  
After about 1 hour of scraping 44 years worth of undercoating and  rust, enough 
clean contact was made and the problem was solved.   Thanks to everyone who 
responded.  Greg - I owe you a beer when we get to  Hopewell!
