  Gents,

Many insurers do not have classic car insurance as a product, but will do
an "agreed value" policy....which means that they will agree with you that
your car is worth $6000 and insure on that basis, even though their charts
show the car as fully depreciated and worth about $300. This is good
for classics that are driven as you insure them as you would any other
daily driver, but avoid having your car written off as a total loss if the
repair cost is greater than $300 (as in the example above).

RE: [NoVa-Corvairs] Insurance for Classics

Hi Mike,

Haggerty. That's the one I had. I had one prior to that, then they
stopped doing classics, and I went to Haggerty. Yes, that is a
requirement. My Corvair was at my parents' and it was not in a garage, but
there was one at their place anyway, so you know, it is outside tonight
because I am working on the Horizon....

GEICO doesn't insure classics? Hmmmm....maybe they were coupling with
another company to offer it and that was what was in the mailing with my
bill that time. I may still have it. I'll see if I can find it.

I believe that I paid around $100 per year to insure mine way back. I
had it from 1996-2000. THere are the mileage limits too, I think I had 2K
on my policy. They say you cannot use it to go to work, shop, etc. Then
the fine print goes on to elaborate that it is understood that the car
needs to be run occassionally.

Howard,

Thanks for the input. Actually, I have GEICO for my other cars. I called
them yesterday and they said they don't insure classics. They referred me
to another company (I can't remember the name).

I did a little research on the internet this morning and found Hagerty
Insurance, which I had at least heard of. I typed in my info and got a
quote of $99/year. This seems pretty darn good but I saw in the fine print
that the car has to be in a locked garage every night - a problem for me
since I have no garage. I wonder if a garage is a common requirement for
classic insurance.

Hi Mike,

I'll have to see who I used to use (since I am in between Corvairs
still....) but I know GEICO now offers such insurance. Too bad they didn't
when I needed it.

Hi All,

I'm planning to finally get my '61 tagged this week, but first I need to
arrange insurance. My current insurance company doesn't offer insurance
for classic cars.

Can anyone suggest a good company? I'm a big fan of saving money so
cheap is good.

Thanks.

Mike
