[NoVa-Corvairs] This Saturday's Meeting

Howard,

Thanks for the suggestion. I hope we can figure it out.

I haven't had a problem while driving (dimming lights or whatever). It
just seems to drain the battery after I park for an hour or two.

My car has is pre-alternator (has the generator). I'm not sure if that
makes a difference.

Mike

Hi Mike and all,

I am going to throw this out to you: it's the charging system. I
speak from experience, though not for my dearly-departed Corvair. From
the dearly-departed Horizon. On that car, the regulator went bad, sent
a surge that killed my alternator. Everything started to dim,
instrument panel lights, signals worked slowly, etc. Then it just would
not stay on. This was in upstate NY about 10 years ago. I'd stopped to
swim laps. I came outside and it was dead. I had it jumped and got it
to 2 miles from my parents' house. Knowing it simply would not make a
hill I needed to go up, I parked it and called home. Next day, we towed
it back. Regulator. Put a new one in, and we simply watched the
voltmeter go lower and lower. Needed a new alternator. And that is
what killed it in the end, 8 years ago, only after that, something else
got fried, it was 11 years old and had been used.

Just my thought. Good luck. Sorry I'll miss seeing everyone. I'll
be in WV for the weekend. Keep me posted as to what you figure out on
Saturday. Enjoy your day.

  Hi All,

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT SATURDAY'S MEETING IS AT MY HOUSE IN KENSINGTON,
NOT MY FOLKS HOUSE WHERE WE'VE MET THE LAST 2 TIMES!
See the newsletter for address/directions.

The agenda for Saturday morning is to try to figure out my electrical
problem(s). The car quickly drains the battery for some reason, as a
few of you witnessed last month at Darrin's. I have no electrical tools
or supplies of any kind (no wire or anything). Can someone please bring
the things we'll need to diagnose/fix?

I think the car also needs some tuning. Its not running as well as it
did a few months ago. I'm not sure what caused that. Last year (about
50 miles ago) we replaced the plugs, plug wires, cap, rotor, and points.
Darrin and I rebuilt the carbs around the same time. We never checked
the timing with a light so I'd like to do that if someone can bring a
light. I'd also like to do a compression check since I've never done
that. Can someone bring that tool (meter)? If anyone has any other
ideas for tuning (balancing carbs?) I'm interested. Just please bring
the necessary tools. I do have a full set of wrenches, sockets, and
screwdrivers.

Remember that the Rockville car show will be held Saturday. We could
caravan over there after the meeting if anyone wants. Its about 10-15
minutes away from my place.

Hope to see you Saturday morning. Thanks.
