Hm. I guess not everyone knows that I'm leaving the area.
Earlier this year I applied for and earned an Army JAG commission. JAG,
which stands for Judge Advocate General, is the corps comprised of the
military's lawyers. JAGs do everything from drafting soldiers' wills to
prosecuting (or defending) Gitmo detainees. A few years ago there was a
TV series called "JAG" that dramatized the work of naval JAG officers.
The Navy, of course, has better uniforms, but sartorial elegance aside
the Army offers a drier workplace.
On 10/22 I journey down to Ft. Lee in Petersburg to accept my commission
as a First Lieutenant. I will be there for two weeks learning how to be
an officer and just generally throwing up on myself due to anxiety. On
11/3 I will trek out to Charlottesville (the UVA law school campus,
actually) and spend 10 weeks at the Army's military justice school.
Then, on 2/3/07, I will be off to (I think) Ft. Sill in Oklahoma to
undergo six weeks of combat training -- mine will be the first ever JAG
class to do this. The only time I've ever fired a weapon was when I
portrayed a soldier at Colonial Williamsburg so, you know, if the Army
still employs breech-loading muskets I'll be okay.
By the middle of March my training will be complete. I will be promoted
to Captain and will report to my first duty assignment at Ft. Leavenworth
in Kansas -- only about 30-45 minutes from Kansas City. I'm certain the
euphemistically named "Disciplinary Barracks" will provide me with both
fascinating work and an intense legal education. Since there are no
troops at Leavenworth it is unlikely (though still possible) that I would
be deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan. That's probably a good thing, even
if that's where the action is.
(Interestingly, for those of you interested in my spiritual growth,
Baghdad or Kabul may each have more Jewish residents than Leavenworth
County, KS:
http://www.thearda.com/mapsReports/reports/counties/20103_2000.asp. To
put that in perspective, at least the Baha'is could field a softball
team.)
Anyway, right around the time of the Vair Fair I hope to swing back
through northern Virginia with that Corvair of mine and say 'hello'.
Why am I doing this, you may be wondering. Well, lots of reasons, which
can be summed up as follows: career, service, importance, personal growth
opportunity, I need something new and challenging, and the world is a
scary place.

PS, Ron and Darrin have graciously offered to help me move my stuff into
storage on Saturday 9/30. If you're around and have a pickup or
similarly large vehicle, feel free to help out!

Hi Daniel, Where are you going between the timeframe where you need to
store your car? Work being transferred from you? What's on your agenda?
Hope all is well otherwise, and hope to see you soon. -Howard
