I looked at Oren's (actually his mother's) '63, powerglide coupe this AM
and it is in sad, sad shape. Before I go any farther I would like to say
something about directions to supplement what A. J. puts in the
newsletter. Oren lives in a trailer park and there are two parks close
together. For most members coming from the East this trailer park is the
second one they will come to on Route 28, Centerville Road, right across
the street from the NAPA auto parts store.
There are two major, initial projects that can be considered for the next
meeting. I say initial as there is so much to do to get this to be the
daily driver that Oren would like it to be. Since Oren last moved the
car some months ago the wheels have frozen and even with another car and
a tow strap they can not break the wheels free. Also it has two flat
tires only one of which will hold air for a few hours. Oren and his dad
will get the tires fixed although the lug nuts look so rusted on it that
that will be a major project itself. The other project is to get the
engine running. It last ran about 2 years ago when Oren decided to
replace the "o" rings and he never got the rocker arms adjusted well
enough to restart the car. His brother, who has since moved out of the
area, MAY have adjusted them since. Oren will call him to find out. The
battery is dead and Oren said they would get a new one before you all get
there. I will be out west and will not be at this meeting. The engine
has oil in it but unfortunately it is mixed with water. it seems when it
rains hard it floods a bit where the car is. The car is on a muddy,
asphalt slab that has some sideways pitch to it. The mechanical fuel
pump has an extra port on it above the inlet port for the line from the
gas tank. This extra port currently has a copper tube coming out of it
with the open end pointing down towards the harmonic balancer. Oren will
ask his brother if he knows why this extra line is there.
So a lot to do and I wish you luck. In a round about way I tried to tell
Oren that the amount of time and effort to make this a daily driver will
be much more than buying another running car. He would be willing to do
that if he could find one.
