Maybe your guage just needs to be adjusted.  I bet it can be.  One of my other older cars was able to be adjusted--using a screwdriver on the back of the guage itself.

I wonder if the gas gauge is interchangeable. Maybe my problem is the 
gauge itself (when tank full only creeps up to 3/4, etc.). My gauge is a 
'68.
