I had the tunnel covers off and replaced them with new ones that I have had for about 30 years just such an occasion. Just curious as to what any of you may have found as a readily available replacement for the felt on the covers which keeps the clutch cable and other rods from rattleling on the metal cover. I bought an outdoor fiber welcome matt and cut off small sections. I then used Scotch, double sided tape to secure the matting to the pan. I just put 1,200 miles on the car and all seems well. However, for other reasons I need to take the covers back off and then can also see how they are holding up. I think at the same time I may soak a little oil into the mats.
By the way, my 1, 200 miles was R/T for the Great Western Fan Belt Toss & Swamp Meet in Palm Springs. First time and in keeping with the culture of southwest part of the country things were, well - a little casual. When I arrived at the host hotel I found out that the event was held off site and there was no one or no written instructions in the hotel to find the event site. So I lost a half day doing nothing regarding Corvairs. When I did get to the event the next day I was please to see 70 Corvairs and about 20 vendors. However, there were no scheduled events, like econo runs or rallies etc. There was a people's choice but it was difficult to make a selection as the cars were randomly parked and not parked by group. So from Friday noon to Sunday noon you had nothing to do but look at cars and visit the vendors. By 3 PM Saturday I had seen everything 3 times in 100 deg. temps and left for home early Sunday morning.
I'll go again next year.
Curt
