Sounds very much like a vacuum leak (missing carb vacuum port cap, cracked or disconnected distributor vacuum hose, leaking vacuum advance diaphragm, carb holddown nuts loose or cracked carb base insulator, etc.), or possibly a bad or disconnected resistor block (it's on the rear frame crossmember, IIRC).
