The article in the current issue of HAM has been discussed for some time. Evidently Greg's breakdown brings the subject close to home.
I have had the experience in two of my cars, requiring the replacement of both tanks a and fuel gage assemblies.
Recently my leaf blower stopped working and when I took it in for warranty repair, the tech knew exactly what was wrong. The plastic tube in the fuel tank that is connected to the carburetor virtually melted off. He said they are all doing that and the best solution is to use gas that is free of ethanol. I have a source of ethanol-free gas so I will be switching on all of my small engines to avoid the problem.
If you don't have access to "pure" gas, he sells a fuel additive called Star Tron Engine Fuel Treatment. This is an additive for dealing with the Ethanol problem. 8 ounces treats 48 gallons. Cost $7.95.
Another additive for treating Ethanol problems is made by Sta-Bil and is called "Sta-Bil Marine Formula Ethanol Treatment". According to the label, it is "Ideal for vehicles and equipment use in harsh moisture-laden environments" which includes ethanol. I think I bought it in Walmart.
I can't say how good or effective these additives or others are, but it is worth a try. We can keep changing gas tanks, pick-ups and carburetors. Of course, the next option is using pure gas, which may be the most effective solution.
This topic sounds like a good topic for all classic car owners.
