[NoVa-Corvairs] Weak starts

Hey all,
I'm throwing a question out to you.  My 62 had a conversion to an alternator and new battery about a year ago.  For the past few weeks the gen/fan light has been on with a very low strength.  It does not seem to vary with the accelerator.  Last week as I went about running errands, the starts became more and more labored and I was concerned I would not get home.  Once I got home I checked the battery and had a 12+ reading. It has started fine when I have checked it since. However I have not taken it out for fear of being stranded. Anybody have any ideas about what may be going on?
