Unplug the connection on the tank. I think it will be a brown or tan
wire with a rubber boot over the connection.
Does the gauge still read half full, or does it go to full or empty?
Connect the terminal on the end of the brown wire to ground with another
wire. Does the gauge now read opposite of the above test (terminal
connected to nothing)?
Measure the resistance of the tank unit by attaching one lead of the
ohmmeter to the terminal (stud) and the other lead to ground on the car.
Read the resistance. Shake the car and see if the resistance changes
with the fuel sloshing. If no change, the tank is empty or the sender is
bad.
