Yup...I didn't say "way down south"!

Down south?

Are you speaking of the Blue Chip machine tool that our CVCC member Russell Davis designed?

Greatest tool made. Doug Jones bought one too. I have the CVCC loaner available also.

I have yet to damage an early bearing during removal with this tool. They all come off.

I have a special tool from down south that allows you to remove an early model bearing from the axle. Pretty cool.

I have been able to grease the bearing in place to my satisfaction though.

If someone needs to use it (ever), just let me know. Need to get it back from Dempsey in any case. He has put it to good use for the last year.

Best,
Darrin

The two times I have had this problem the Yoke was more worn than the Axel spline. Alot of us used to save the yoke and spline together as a unit. But someone here should have a setup with a good axel.

If your bearing seems good it can be pulled off, regressed, and put back on.

Give the steel axle to your machinist friends or make another part out of it. Excellent steel.

The 60 to 62 axle bearing is easy to re-grease on the the axle as you can split the case/outer flange/shell by drilling out the rivets and do not have to put them back as the bolts/nuts that hold it on to the suspension keep it together. Unless you are putting on a repro bearing and you still should grease. Van/FC bearings can also be split this way and greased.

But at minimum use a grease needle thru the seal to put some really good waterproof grease in there. The main reason they go bad is dry lubrication.

So if you find the right year axle with bolt/washer. s and yoke with a bearing bad bet a new bearing, you could transfer yours if good or ordera new Clarks. Always good to have an extra axle with bearing around especially if you travel distance.

Actual experiences from my part. Oh, I actually had an axle shear. Right outward of the bearing so wheel and brake drum fell off and bearing and axle stayed on the FC. On looking at it it had an old fracture that was there for years and the rest broke while going down 270 (almost 30 years ago).

The tour was excellent yesterday and was done before the rains. Some nice Vintage

vehicles.

Trey

Can you post some pictures of the broken part. As Frank says this is an unusual circumstance.

John Erickson came by today and discovered that the passenger side axle shaft and flange are broken on my '62 Monza. Good news is the transmission/clutch appear to be fine. Anybody have a lead on a new axle shaft and flange with a bearing if possible. I need it for the passenger side if that matters. Thanks
