[NoVa-Corvairs] steering shaft question

hi all. Hope everyone is well.  Been traveling a lot to my parents lately,
so been a bit MIA, but I have a question on my 65 Corsa steering.  It
COMPLETELY went out on me on Thanksgiving.  I mean, steering wheel spun
like a top with no steering.  Luckily, I had just brought it home from my
shop and was literally parking it on my street at home when it happened.
Here is a shot from underneath..  It's up next to the gas tank- and I guess
this is the coupler- on the shaft from the steering wheel, you can see a
bit of non rusted metal. It appears that the shaft is spinning in the
coupler. I was expecting to see something more broken but I'm not sure how
the coupler is on the inside. Has anyone tackled this before?  Any tips?
It's way up there, not a lot of easy access and the coupler looks pretty
rusty.
