<font size="2">Head is out! Thankful that I did not have to drill or chisel any of the head nuts. All came off intact with vice grips on the studs and PB Blaster. Used two breaker bars on the vice grips to close them with very tight grip on the studs.</font>

Bagged items from each cylinder into separate baggies All of the studs were tight, but a couple of them screeched a bit upon removal. The rocker assemble for the #4 cyl exhaust valve came off in one piece, that is, the torque on the nut removed the stud and it came off as one piece. I separated them afterward, and they look fine, but what do I know.</div>

<div>Been soaking the upper nuts with PB Blaster for a few days, so I thought I would try my luck today with removal. Moderate success.</div>

<div>I removed the fan and pulley to open up more access to the studs. I thought I would try the vice grip method. I tried to place the grips so that they abutted one of the cylinders in the direction turning the nut would move the grips. I was able to remove two of the nuts. Although the vice grips did not move, it seemed the stud slid a bit on them. As best I can judge using the exposed threads at the block, it seems that one or one and a half threads exposed was pretty standard on the studs I didn't touch. The ones from which I got the bolts off were at about two exposed threads. So the stud turn one half to one full thread for the entire removal of the nut. Could that have caused damage? Is there a number of acceptable threads before damage happens. I was just thinking that backing the stud out a little opens up a little space between the back of the nut and the head, and some penetrating oil in that space could help as well. </div>

I am only talking about an 8th to a quarter turn at the most. I would not go any tighter that that for this process.<br>

<div>Soak the top head nuts liberally with the best penetrate you have to help things along. Bob, Fred and I like Kroil. But more than wd-40. It may still be an adventure to see if the nuts will come off with out taking the stud out of the block.</div>

<div>Once we all get this head off and look at it. I am with the group that says you should do a good job on both heads. There are some real artists who can do quality head work. Do it once. I guess this will make fixing your left choke rod easier , eh?</div>
