Everett L. "Ben" Benzel July 12, 1931 - February 20, 2008. SMSgt. Everett L. "Ben" Benzel, USAF (Ret.), a resident of Colorado Springs since 1970, passed away on February 20, 2008 at a local hospital. Ben was born on July 12, 1931 in Ritzville, Washington, the youngest of ten children born to the late Henry and Anna (Rehn) Benzel. Ben served his country honorably in the United States Air Force for 22 years, including numerous tours of duty within the U.S., Okinawa and Italy. He then founded the Air Force Academy Chapter of the Non-Commissioned Officers Association where he worked as a counselor for over 20 years. He also worked with the Southern Colorado Air Force Retiree Council. He was a member of the Retired Enlisted Association, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Pikes Peak Corvair Club and was a great supporter of the Air Force Academy Athletic Department and the Special Olympics. Ben will be greatly missed by his wife of 45 years, Bettie Jo, daughter and
son-in-law, Kandel and Darryl Hess, and two grandsons, Tyler and Zachary. He will also be missed by his sister, Ilene Ellsworth of Indianapolis, Indiana; Shirley Klein and Dorothy Eckhardt of Ritzville, Washington; numerous nieces and nephews; and by his many friends in this, the community he served for so many years. The memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 25, 2008 at the United States Air Force Academy Cadet Protestant Chapel. A reception will follow the service. Cremation is planned. Private interment will be at the Shrine of Remembrance Rose Gardens. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Everett L.
