G'day team,
Rex here, many thanks for the replies (and for Kristal for attempting to decipher my rants yesterday). It was one of those "last week it was fine and now it won't idle" kinds of days. 😀
Thanks also for the offer of a chat - today was a bit hectic for a call, but I might take you up on your kind offer tomorrow.
To provide better background and context, the transmission has been on a gradual downwards trajectory since earlier this year. Until the transmission warms up it won't shift from low to high, but instead goes from low into a weird neutral state where I guess the high band doesn't quite lock in. For several months after it warms up it would shift up and down fine. However that has now got progressively worse, to the point where yesterday after 30mins of warmed driving it still wouldn't shift up to second. As opposed to last weekend, when it ran and drove relatively normally...
The second problem is the significant drop in revs going into drive from neutral. There has always been a drop (which I put down to the extra drag of the supercharger), it seems like I need the idle really high to maintain in gear.
I've hunted vacuum leaks (but am ready to be proven wrong) and replaced the modulator last month. Trans fluid was replaced in June, with trans-x added. I have another governor ready to swap in (the one in the car has snapped off the flange to bolt to the trans, and is held in place with a strap, so it might be shifting in place?).
In the short term I'm going to swap out the spark plugs tomorrow as they look pretty fouled, to see whether that at least gets me back to where we were last week.
After that, it kind of feels like I might be looking at more major surgery.
Thanks again,
Rex Harrison
